Product design for young engineers is centred around reverse engineering projects where we allow students to modify an everyday product and redesign a ‘smart’ version of it from scratch. Students get to do 3D printing, CNC Machining, use power tools, make their own PCB boards and explore the practical application of complicated theoretical knowledge as they have fun!
This programme shadows real-life reverse engineering and product design projects where students work on actual budgeting, prototyping, producing and marketing of their own products, helping them gain exposure and practice that stretches far beyond what textbooks could ever teach them!
Step 01: Tear Down
Pick a product of your choosing and literally break it apart. Using reverse engineering, figure out how you want to rebuild this product from scratch while making it even better.
Targeted skills – Reverse Engineering, Product Design
Hand tools and power tools
Step 02: Ideation
Create your own soft prototype using soft materials such as foam core, cardboard, clay and sticks while ensuring you make the necessary changes for the new features you want to add.
Targeted skills – Rapid Prototyping, Engineering Drawings
Soft materials
Step 03: Electronics and IOT
Design your electronic and IOT systems using multiple sensors, micro controllers and development boards for your product and also design your own PCB board to connect them all together.
Targeted skills – Embedded Systems Design, Programming, PCB manufacturing
Arduino
Magicbit
EasyEDA
Step 04: 3D design
Create a 3D model of your final product using CAD software. Ensure your product looks and feels good by following basic design principles.
Targeted skills – 3D drawing, Mechanisms
Fusion360
Step 05: Manufacturing
Use several manufacturing and prototyping techniques such as 3D printing, CNC machining, woodworking and laser cutting to create all the physical parts required for your product to come into life.
Targeted skills – manufacturing techniques, safety, rapid prototyping
3D printing, CNC machining, Laser cutting,
Step 06: Final Pitch
Introduce your final product by pitching it to the rest of the class and judges and also ensure your product has a good package and the correct price.
Targeted skills – Presentation, Marketing, Branding
